On Sep. 9th, 1968 a fight of two F-8C Crusader from VF-111 Det.11 encountered two ”Blue Bandits” (MIG-21s) while escorting A-4s on a bombing mission. At the time the veteran aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) was called into action in the Gulf of Tonkin, and on this particular deployment, a detachment of VF-111 was aboard the ship giving rise to the VF-111 det. 11 designation. The pilot of the F-8Cs were LT Tony Nargi and LTJG Alex Rucker. The MIG-21s took evasive action the moment Nargi and Rucker saw them, with one MIG breaking to a climb, which turned into a loop. While in the loop Nargi was able to get missile lock on the aircraft and fired a single AIM-9 missile. The missile blew the tail section of the MIG-21. The other MIG was engaged by Rucker and later also Nargi, and both aircraft fired a single AiM-9 at the remaining MIG-21. The AIM-9s proximity fuse made the missiles explode close to the MIG-21 but didn’t seem to do any damage to the aircraft, as it managed to escape, unharmed.
